New nerd obsession. The Way of Kings book series by Brandon Sanderson. A time consuming, wonderful indulgence. And of course we can find great philosophy embedded in the story beside the brilliant character development and creative settings.
My gifted class is done for the year, but if they were back for one day, I would read them the following quote:
“Too many scholars think of research as purely a cerebral pursuit. If we do nothing with the knowledge we gain, then we have wasted our study. Books can store information better than we can--what we do that books cannot is interpret. So if one is not going to draw conclusions, then one might as well just leave the information in the texts.” pg 462.
Excellent embodiment of the independent study.
So many times this past year we have had the conversation about what to do with what we learn. When your greatest achievement is learning--how do you show this? Gifted students have such an opportunity to excel at this--the connecting, the reflecting--how do you slow down a fast moving picture to a frame by frame shot--which still captures what you learn? How does this learning translate into a professional product?
