daVinci Syndrome

daVinci Syndrome--a collective problem in gifted, or asynchronous learners, where the individual is intrinsically motivated to learn, but is not motivated to prove to anyone else outwardly what they know or have learned. This individual learns and reasons for the joy of doing so, and does not personally need the physical evidence that their ideas will work to have the satisfaction of knowing such. This person may appear to be an underachieving or apathetic.

Take for example my Independent Studies Class.

Every day I hear excellent conversations. Deep. Mature.

I see beautiful artwork.

I read amazing stories.

I see passion. I see positive action.

Students changing their world. Ahh...amazing...and I am blessed to be there on that journey…

BUT! Traditional education says we grade. The state of TX says we need a professional product. Life dictates that we actually communicate ideas effectively, not just bounce them around. Professional product means that others can access, view, and understand what work has been done. Does the idea or product sell in the mainstream?

And there it is folks.

The facilitator part of the job.

The cajoling, begging, pleading, threatening. Can you send me that work you have done?

Can you email me the link to your website?

Write down those ideas?

Do that beautiful art work on a permanent medium (not just the white board)?

Prodding those DaVinci’s to produce.

Or look at the student who “earns” a B in Math. Does this student have 85% understanding? Or do they really understand the material 100% and did not bother to turn in the home work--although they did complete it? What do you see? Do you see apathy? Or do you see DaVinci?

daVinci Syndrome is the whole--I know I understand/can complete, but I feel absolutely no need to prove it to anyone beside myself.

daVinci was gifted. Don’t you think?

I wonder if his teachers/mentors were ever frustrated by his lack of professional product?

Maybe in his younger years--there is little known of those first five years.

Was he ever labeled a dreamer? The kid who wouldn’t do the assigned work?
