you have me convinced! There are other paths to higher education than just college.

In his book, One Size Does Not Fit All, Nikhil Goyal pulls from many sources to put together some of the best ideas on education reform. Passionate, yet well cited, he cries out for change. Most of it is information that we have heard elsewhere, but in Goyal's book it is well curated into a convincing argument.
One of the most convincing arguments that he had was the statement that college does not always equate a better job or career. Ouch. Growing up with other's from my generation where going to college was just the next step for those who were lucky enough to have the door opened, it is a bit jarring to think of my eldest not attending college next year. Yet, as I have so glibly counseled many soon to be grads, it is now the time for choosing their own path. Parent have trouble swallowing some of the risks that young grads often take, but this is where we trust that the past 18 years of of training kicks in. And with risk taking comes discovery, great growth, and freedoms. It is what we envy them for--so why not let them chart their own course. If we bless the journey, they will be more likely to seek guidance for the way.
So yes, I am nervous--but I also understand that something has to give. May you all find a better path in education reform than we built for you. It is what we keep telling you after all, "It's your education--go get it!"
More on this in Carol Dweck's book Mindset about HOW we should be self teaching and studying.
